This year the Santa Cruz County International Film Festival hosted a tour to Mescal, Arizona. The tour van left the Nogales Hotel Americana at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning October 23 en route to this famous movie and television filming location.
Mescal is located on 60 acres of land near the town of Benson, Arizona. It was constructed as an old west town in the 1960’s and was the site location in the 1970’s for the television show Little House on the Prairie.
Since then it has been used as a shooting location for more than 50 television shows and classic Westerns, including some of those featured in this year’s film festival: The Quick and the Dead, Monte Walsh, The Frisco Kid and Tom Horn.
This famous movie set is owned by Old Tucson Studios, although it is not an established tourist destination. In fact, Mescal is rarely open to the public, so this is a truly unique opportunity to see a piece of movie history.
The tour was led by film historians from Old Tucson Studios, and along the way we made some stops at locations in Santa Cruz County where motion pictures were filmed.
When we arrived in Mescal, our movie historians showed us around and entertained the group with stories about the location, the movie stars who worked at Mescal and the productions that were filmed there.
The tour group returned to the Americana Hotel at approximately 4:00 p.m.
